You, me and just about everyone has to have their morning java to get going. So, is coffee good or bad for you from a nutritional perspective?

A look at the nutritional breakdown of a one cup serving of coffee, brewed from grounds, and prepared with tap water reveals a lot of zeros. Some of these zeros show up in the fat column. There is zero total fat, zero saturated fat, and zero Trans fat. This is certainly good news for coffee drinkers. There are also no cholesterol and no carbohydrates.

On the downside, there is also zero sugars and dietary fibers. You also find no measurement for protein or any vitamins or minerals. There are only 5 mgs of sodium and a total of two calories. What this means is that basic cup of coffee is not going to do you much harm from a health or diet standpoint, but on the other hand it is not going to do you a lot of good either. This is looking at it from a nutrition point of view. Most likely, the coffee is going to both wake you up and put you in a better mood, but it isnt going to take care of any of your nutritional needs.

The problem with coffee, as it is with so many items, is not the coffee itself, but the things that you add to it. Once you begin to fill the cup with sugar, pour in a shot of whole milk, and then spurt a bit of whipped cream on top, you have created a whole new nutritional picture. At coffee shops, flavor additives are very common. A spurt of additive like French Vanilla or Strawberry flavoring is going to add as much as 80 calories per shot. The calorie spread between skim milk and whole milk is significant also.

Sweeteners are another coffee related issue. Sugar substitutes are a whole different issue and have many pros and cons. If they are routinely added to your basic cup of coffee, they have to be taken into consideration when doing a nutrition analysis.

It would appear that coffee is a fairly harmless drink when you just drink it plain, unsweetened, and black. However, you need to consider so many issues when you are looking at your health and well being. A debate could be held over the relative health merits of high caffeine levels versus a few extra calories and a bit of fat.
